Ensemble Solistas de La Habana

In 1998, in order to accompany the Exaudi Choir on a tour of Spain, a group of members of the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba formed a Chamber Ensemble that would later on repeatedly perform this work at many international venues such as Argentina,

Mexico and the Vatican. In this manner Solistas de La Habana was formed.

In 2003 this chamber ensemble became permanent with very peculiar characteristics: it has the virtue of unfolding in a trio, a quartet, a small baroque ensemble, even into medium sized chamber orchestra. Its founder and artistic & musical director, bassist Ivan Valiente, initially decided that the ensemble would not have a permanent director, but would rather call upon renowned national and international maestros for the larger format repertoire, while interpreting classical and baroque styles without a conductor. They set upon rescuing the less known or rarely heard by the Cuban public repertoire. The uniqueness of unfolding in smaller formats is a exclusive feature of Solistas de La Habana ensemble, amongst all the chamber orchestras of the country.

Its twenty-five members have worked under the baton of the Maestros Leo Brouwer, Elena Herrera, María Elena Mendiola and Ivan del Prado (Cuba), Yoshikazu Fukumura (Japan), Francesco Belli (Italy), Natalie Marin (France) and Kenneth Nafziger (USA).

They have taken part in the opening or closing concerts of several editions of the National Chamber Music Festival, Baroque September and the International Esteban Salas Early Music Festival. They are frequently presented on radio and national television. They recorded the soundtrack of the film Roble de olor, with works by the composer Sergio Vitier.

They have performed in many international venues. Along the Exaudi choir they interpreted the “Misa cubana a la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre”, under the direction of its author, pianist and composer Jose Maria Vitier.

Their CD-DVD nineteenth century Cuban Classics, published by Producciones Colibrí, won two prizes in the Cubadisco 2009 contest, in the categories of best concert music album and best making of.

In July 2010, they interpreted, together with the Yale University chorus, led by Maestro Jeffrey Douma, the Beethoven’s "Choral Fantasy op. 80", during the this group’s presentation in Havana. In November of this same year, at the XXII edition of the Havana International Ballet Festival, they were invited by Alicia Alonso to accompany various presentations.

Their repertoire ranges from the Renaissance and Baroque to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Amongst which are works by Leo Brouwer (who has composed specifically for this group), Fabio Landa, Carlos Fariñas and Roberto Valera, among others.
