Música Eterna

The Chamber Orchestra "Música Eterna'', founded in 1995 by maestro Guido Lopez Gavilan, is composed by a select group of students and graduates of the Higher Institute of Arts. Currently, it is a prestigious musical group that performs with great success at international events,

plays in the main theaters and concert halls of our country, as well as on major radio and television shows. Musica Eterna has recorded for TV and Radio. And its CD "Barroco Tropical" won the CUBADISCO award in the Chamber Music category. Radio Havana Cuba broadcasted live to the whole world the concert given at the Amadeo Roldan Theater on the 40th Anniversary of this radio station.

Their tours throughout Cuba and major cities of Canada, Spain, Colombia and the United States (where they performed at the prestigious Jordan Hall in Boston, having great success with the audience, and excellent reviews from the critics) have been outstanding. All their presentations have ended with standing ovations from the audience, requesting another piece with their applause. Together with “Música Eterna" many Cuban soloists and renowned international artists from different countries have performed. Amongst these are included Italian composer and bassist Stefano Scodanibbio, American violinists Richard Luby and Erik Grossmann, Austrian violist Christoph Angerer and the Canadian director and cellist Tanya Prochazka.

Música Eterna’s repertoire ranges from the great masters of the Baroque to contemporary composers, with the technical and aesthetic versatility of our days. Música Eterna’s versatility has allowed them to successfully present concerts as diverse as Handel's Messiah at the Cathedral of Havana, or of John Lennon’s music together with the famous singer Silvio Rodriguez. Their excellent versions of popular Cuban and Latin American pieces bestow a unique color to this group, which has successfully managed to combine demanding artistic rigor with youth’s drive and dynamism.

The CD "De Cuba, Música Eterna" was recently launched with great success amongst the public and the critics. A DVD devoted entirely to the music of Guido Lopez Gavilan - filmed live during a concert at the Basilica of San Francisco - is currently in production.

In regards to one of their performances at the Amadeo Roldan Theater of Havana, the American critic Greg Sandow wrote in the Wall Street Journal (New York, May 29, 1999):

... with a small set of string musicians they achieved a truly excellent Vivaldi, as well as the works of Lopez Gavilán himself that brought on huge cheers from the audience that filled the theater.

(About their performance at the XVII International Festival of Youth Orchestras, Spain):

... Lopez Gavilan’s works were absolutely sensational, and were a demonstration of great technical level, extravagance of musicality, the sense of rhythm and creativity of the musicians, and also, what wonderful clear, flexible and expressive gestures by the director.
