National Choir of Cuba

The National Choir of Cuba, created in 1960 by Maestro Serafin Pro, is a continuation of the Rebel Army Choir, founded in 1959 on the initiative of the Commanders Ernesto Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos.

Throughout these fifty years of uninterrupted work, they have worked intensely in the cultural diffusion of Cuban and world choral music, popular or classical, Renaissance or contemporary. Important world premieres and first auditions in Cuba have been performed by this group. We should highlight the first two symphonic-choral works they performed at the beginning: "Cantata for Peace", by Juan Blanco, and "Polovtsian Dances" from the Prince Igor opera, by S. Borodin, with the newly formed National Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Enrique Gonzalez Mantici and which was presented at the Caney de las Mercedes, in the Sierra Maestra, during one of the first celebrations of the Anniversary of the 26th of July.

From its first years of creation, the National Choir began to display its versatility. One example is the participation in the presentations of La casita criolla y La isla de las cotorras, of the Cuban vernacular theater, which were performed at the Amadeo Roldán Theater between 1962 and 1963. Also very significant are the joint presentations with the National Opera and the National Ballet of Cuba. They received the Jury’s Special Prize in the Competition at Debrecen, Hungary.

Since 1975 Professor Digna Guerra has been the director. They have recorded soundtracks for over thirty films, including The Last Supper by Tomas Gutierrez Alea, with musical direction by Leo Brouwer, and El siglo de las luces, by Humberto Solas, with musical direction by José María Vitier. To their credit is the realization of three recordings, and they received the Silver Record awarded by the Musical Recordings and Publishing Company of Cuba.

The National Choir has performed choral workshops with the participation of leading and recognized international specialists such as Jeffrey Fairweather (Jamaica), Robert Sund (Sweden), Jorge Medina (Mexico), Carl Høgset (Norway), and Gunnar Erickson (Sweden).

They have participated in important festivals in Hungary, Sweden and Canada, among other countries, and they have received numerous decorations and awards, including the Order for National Culture, the replica of the machete of General Maximo Gomez, the distinction Heroic Tradition Center - presented by the Central de Trabajadores de Cuba, the Giraldilla of Havana - granted by the Provincial Administration Council, and the Honor Award of the Cubadisco International Fair.
